At 9:40 am, December 4, 2011, two giant pandas – Tian Tian and Yang Guang – that have drawn attention from the whole world traveled from Chengdu, China to Edinburgh, UK on a FedEx Boeing 777F charter. The charter, No. 892, arrived at Shuangliu International Airport on December 3. In order to ensure the safety and punctual departure of China’s national treasures, I, along with two Field Line Maintenance members from Hong Kong and Shanghai, conducted a thorough and careful check of the aircraft. As the ramp where the aircraft parked only allows oil tank truck to operate, and the estimated time of departure (ETD) of the aircraft was a busy time for aircraft refueling, combined with the fact that this type of aircraft consumes huge amounts of fuel, our team decided to adopt the “Twice Refueling” method. Twice Refueling requires refueling the plane with most of the fuel upon arrival and supplying the rest before take-off. This method avoids the risk of delay due to fuel. At 5:30 am on December 4, our team arrived at the airport and made the final preparations for the panda-charter departure. Just two hours before take-off, when Tian Tian and Yang Guang arrived at the ramp along with a large number of media, a fully prepared FedEx Panda Express was ready for take off. These two lovely pandas flew first class to the UK on time with the friendship and warm wishes of the Chinese people supporting them. We hope that Tian Tian and Yang Guang will travel on the FedEx Panda Express upon their return to China.
