A Bridge Between China and Europe

In March 2011, my husband’s company transferred him to Germany to work for two years. In order to be with my family, I submitted my resignation as senior sales manager to my director, Lydia, and explained that I would be moving to Germany.

When my director heard the news, she told me that I might not need to quit my job at FedEx where I had been working for 14 years. After understanding my reason for leaving, Lydia and Marco Lee, FedEx China sales vice president, asked me to stay with FedEx after moving to Germany. After further discussing with Kuan-Thye Sean, Managing Director of Human Resources, FedEx China, they offered me a position as a Frankfurt-based senior key account specialist focusing on business development between China and Germany.

I accepted the special two-year assignment, and when I started my new job in Frankfurt, I received a lot of support from Ingmar Bergman, sales managing director, FedEx Germany. He helped me build my people network in different markets and countries including Germany, Austria, and Belgium.  

I saw myself as a bridge between China and Europe. I introduced the China market and FedEx China capabilities to the sales team in Germany. I supported their urgent requests and worked closely with different teams to complete important tasks. I also passed business opportunities to sales teams in both Germany and China.

I still remember when Marco came to see me in Frankfurt during his trip to Europe. He provided me with valuable advice on improving my performance. In addition, Ingmar and Lydia regularly reviewed my performance and shared ways to improve. I am very grateful to FedEx for offering me such a good opportunity, which allowed me to fully utilize my skills and gave me overseas experience.

In August 2013, I returned to Shanghai with my husband; my two-year assignment was completed. I was back with a rewarding and unforgettable experience. I was the first FedEx China employee to work abroad for such a long time. Since I had been away from China for so long, I thought that I might not be able to get a position with FedEx China. On the contrary, FedEx offered me a position on the sales team. I returned to working with my previous colleagues in China and shared my experience and what I learned in Germany.

From my experience over the past two years, I truly feel the “People First” philosophy at FedEx. I’m very happy and proud to work at such a wonderful place!
