Mentoring First Robotics

From my first moment as a mentor, the parallels between First Robotics and FedEx were not lost on me, the lessons the kids learn are the same we learn with the Purple Promise and Living PSP. It’s no wonder that FedEx is involved with First Robotics, as they share the same vision of technology and problem solving that makes FedEx so successful.

The robotics team followed a solid performance in Southington, CT with an absolutely amazing performance this weekend in Maine.  In Southington, we finished 23rd overall and won the Team Spirit Award. We competed on the 8th alliance for finals, but were eliminated in the quarter finals.

In Maine we finished 8th overall and won the Quality Award.  As the #8 seed, we were captains of the 8th alliance.  Sean Drzewiecki was nominated by the student members as Alliance Captain, and represented the team in the selection process. In the quarter finals, matched against the alliance captained by the #3 seed team, we won 2 out of the 3 moving up to the semifinals (the final four!)  In the semifinals, we drew the #2 seed, playing well but were outmatched and eliminated.

All told, we finished 56th out of 162 teams in the New England District. The top 54 teams are invited to regionals, officially we are an alternate and as it turns out we were invited to regionals. We never imagined being so successful this season, as this is the best season by far for the team.

With some hasty planning, the team was off to Boston University. As expected the competition was fierce, but the individual scores showed that the team had improved over the previous competitions, and we ended up in 42nd place for the qualifiers.  I am proud that I brought the living PSP spirit outside FedEx by working with the other teams to nominate Walpole Robotics for the Gracious Professionalism award, for they were instrumental in clearing the way to attend Boston, giving up hotel rooms so we could compete in the championship.

I’m Michael Drzewiecki and I am FedEx.
